Arbeit mit Till Schneider und Malte Just

A viewing tower for the Biennale in Antalya

Three Frankfurt-based architectural practices – Uli Exner, INDEX architects, Malte Just, Just/Burgeff architects and Till Schneider, schneider+schumacher architects in collaboration with the consulting engeneer Phillip Eisenbach from Bollinger + Grohmann Ingenieure - have developed a joint project which links the skyline in their home city with the Turkish city on the sea.

The installation is located on a prominent harbour wall, protecting the harbour from the open sea. The direction of the walkway on the harbour wall translates into a publicly accessible tower, with an upper platform oriented perpendicular to the end of the pier. A gesture of protection and demarcation is thus transformed into one of openness and connection. A staircase within the tower leads up to a platform, where the view opens up in two directions: the sea and the city. The tower is designed as a timber and steel construction.

Its vertical sides are clad in opaque material whereas the inclined surfaces are translucent. The tower’s outward appearance is sculptural and emblematic, and climbing the inner staircase the tension mounts towards the unobstructed view at the top.
